Form Follows... Form
Danish ceramics continues to be in excellent hands with even greater prospects for the future. This is due in no small measure to the work of UK-based Merete Rasmussen. A graduate of the Oestra Grevie Folkhoegskola in textiles and ceramics in Sweden (1997-1999), the student exchange program of Glasgow School of Art, Scotland (2004), and most importantly, the world renowned Designskolen Kolding in Ceramics, Denmark (2000-2005), Merete is at the forefront of the new generation of Danish ceramic sculptors.
That this is abstract sculptural work of the highest order is attested by its pride of place in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, UK, the New York Museum of Arts and Design, USA, National Fund of Contemporary Arts, France, and the Guldagergaard, The International Ceramic Research Centre, Denmark, to name just a few.
Merete’s work explores the arena of pure form and color. She has accepted the challenge of defining and comprehending the four dimensions of time and space through physical form. Her shapes embody the idea of a captured movement.
These pieces are each a flowing form stretching or curling around itself or an idea derived from repeated natural forms or complex mathematical constructions. She is especially adept at the intricacies of the shape first formally described by German mathematician August Möbius (1790-1868). “I am intrigued by the idea of a continuous surface, for example with one connected edge. I work with the idea of a composition in all four dimensions, seeking balance and harmony running through an entire form.” The Möbius Strip is a convoluted object with a single continual surface. Impossible you say, yet she confronts you with beautiful examples right before your eyes. Different expressions of form appeal to her and result in an ongoing exploration with many different variations: soft but precise curves, sharp edges, concave surfaces shifting to convex; the discovery and strength of an inner or negative space.
All of her finished forms have energy, enthusiasm, and a sense of purpose. And each of these aspects is emphasized by a monochrome matt surface. The choice of strong but subtle colors adds further importance, strength, and energy. Her work is hand built using a coiling technique in stoneware clay.
