Johan van Loon °1934 in The Netherlands
It is not about creating out of chaos, because I'm even too chaotic, impulsive and impatient for this.
The unpredictable ways of creating are the basis of my work. An everlasting mutation of rhythms , structures, colours and shapes.
The essence is the energy and the poetry of the material, which vibrates in itself and the magic power – nourished by freedom.
What I love in art is not its perfection, which is deceptive, but its pulsating life.
There are so many skilled craftspeople, but so few practising dreamers.
These are all statements made by Johan Van Loon who was originally a textile designer graduating from the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 1956. Around 1960 he became interested in ceramics and made study trips to Scandinavia, learning at the Finnish factory Arabia, the Swedish Konstfackskolan, the Danish Kunsthaandvaerkerskolen and from Dame Lucie Rie, he learned how to make porcelain.
By the end of the 1970s Van Loons name was established both as an artist and as a ceramic designer working for Royal Copenhagen and Rosenthal along with his unique pieces created in his atelier in Breda.
A baroque universe of colours, curls and waves, gold lustres, carnival and glitter. That's how Johan Van Loon's pieces appear to the public for the past more than 30 years. To Pay justice to his earlier work and not least to his image there will be some early pieces on show. The main part of the show consists of new beautiful thrown assemblages in pure white porcelain with great undulating curves and shapes.
